Asexual budding results in the formation of a new individual produced from a single parent, as a result of an outgrowth (bud) that becomes detached. Cryptococcus is an encapsulated yeast, comprising 37 species, only one (C. neoformans) of which is pathogenic. It causes cryptococcosis, which attacks the lungs and causes a tumour-like mass (toruloma). Magnification unknown.
