Fungal spores. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of fungal spores (red) around a wound. Spores are the reproductive cells of fungi. The majority of fungal infections occur on the surface of the body, as the skin acts as a very effective barrier against fungal entry, and are not serious. At the site of wounds however, fungi may enter the body and cause more serious infections, such as cryptococcal meningitis, especially in those with a compromised immune system.
