Puffball fungus (Lycoperdon perlatum). This common puffball is found growing on decaying material. This is the fruiting body (reproductive structure), of the fungus. It contains the spores (reproductive cells), which are released when the puffball explodes. It is edible, but bland. Photographed in October in Cornwall, UK.
