Caption

Magpie ink cap fungus (Coprinus picaceus). The outer edge of the cap is in the process of self- digestion (autodeliquescence) which allows the release of spores (the reproductive cells of fungi), towards the centre of the cap, which mature later. To see the cap at an earlier stage of spore release see B250/1445, and at a later stage B250/1447. Photographed in Normandy, France, in November.
