Caption

Ergot fungus. Light micrograph of a vertical section of the fruiting body of ergot of rye (Claviceps purpurea) a fungus which belongs to the Ascomycotina, Pyrenomycetes. The grain is replaced by sclerotia of ergots which do much damage because they contain toxic alkaloids which can cause abortion and poisoning in animals.
