Caption

Apples exhibiting brown rot. This is caused by the fungus Sclerotinia fructigena, and may also occur on pears and some other fruits. Fruit infected with this fungus bear buff-coloured pustules of conidium spores. Production of the spores is stimulated by light, and may form in concentric zones corresponding to daily illumination.
