Food spoilage. A collection of mouldy foods including bread, cheese, apples and potatoes. The spoilage is caused by fungal growth and appears as brown or green mould on the surface of the food. This mould originates as atmospheric fungal spores which settle on food, germinate and produce a mass of growth using the food as nourishment. Different types of fungi cause different moulds.
