Mould on a lemon. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of mould growing on the surface of a lemon (Citris limon). The mould consists of many filamentous hyphae that together form a mycelium. Mould is a fuzzy growth produced on organic matter by several different types of fungi. It began as tiny airborne spores which germinated on contact with the surface of the lemon and spread rapidly. Root-like rhizoids (not seen) penetrate downwards into the lemon, secreting enzymes and absorbing water and sugars. Magnification unknown.
