Irradiated and normal strawberries after several days. The irradiated strawberries (left) were exposed to gamma radiation after they were picked, which killed any micro-organisms on or in them. Irradiation is used to prolong the life of fruits and vegetables, which gives them more time for transportation and a longer shelf-life.
