Cotton stockings. Historical image showing an Agricultural Department fabric technician examining cotton stockings. During the 1940s, as a means of disposing of surplus long-staple cotton, the US Government was making efforts to improve the quality of cotton stockings in order to encourage more women to wear them. Photographed in July 1941.
