Evgeny Lifshitz (1915-1985, left)and Lev Landau (1908-1968, right), Soviet physicists. Lifshitz and Landau co-authored a ten volume series of textbooks titled 'Course of Theoretical Physics'. The series gave a graduate level introduction to the entire field of physics and is still in use today. Landau made important contributions to quantum mechanics, diamagnetism, superconductivity and plasma physics.
