Robot swarm research. Researcher testing software on a Formica robot swarm. This is a new generation of robots that is capable of combining to carry out tasks such as checking for survivors in ruined buildings after disasters, or exploring distant planets. The robots consist of circuit boards with small motors attached, and were designed to be low-cost and easy to mass-produce. Photographed in 2009, at the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, UK.
