Caption

Lead-free soldering research. Researcher carrying out a micro-structural investigation on lead-free solder using an electron microscope (display screen at lower left). The microscope sample chamber has been opened here. The aim of this research is to enable reductions in the amount of lead (a toxic material) used in electronic devices. However, studies like this are needed to assess how long the new solders will last compared to lead-based ones. Photographed in 2009, at the University of Leicester, UK.
