Uterine fibroids. Cutaway artworks showing a healthy set of female reproductive organs (upper left) and the same set but with a uterus with fibroids (leiomyomas, lower right). These benign tumours are the beige growths seen within the wall of the uterus. Uterine fibroids arise from the smooth muscle of the uterus wall. They do not usually require treatment, but some can cause bleeding, pain and other disorders. Large fibroids may need to be surgically removed. The other parts of the female reproductive system shown here are the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, and the vagina.
