Bacterial ribosome. Molecular model showing the structure of a 70S ribosome from the bacteria Thermus thermophilus in complex with mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid). Ribosomes are composed of protein and RNA (ribonucleic acid). In bacteria each ribosome consists of a small (30S) subunit and a large (50S) subunit. They are the site of translation, the process of protein synthesis. In bacteria they are also a target for antibiotic drugs.
