Caption

Animals that once lived where Paris now is" an anonymous lithograph opposite page 21 from the American Children's book "Wonders of the Earth Sea and Sky" 1837 written by Peter Parlay (the nom de Plume of Samuel Goodrich). This illustration is perhaps the first prehistoric scene to take Cuvier's formal reconstructions of the likely appearance of this Tertiary Fauna and give the animals natural attitudes and postures. The picture features from left to right a tortoise, Palaeotherium, crocodile, Anoplotherium, and Palaeotherium.
