1909 "On Darwin's hundredth Birthday" Illustration of Charles Darwin in heavenly tree with young chimpanzee (left) and orangutan (right). Chromolithograph by the German artist Thomas Theodor Heine in the German periodical "Simplicissimus" 15th February 1909. Below the tree, German biologist Ernst Haeckel offers Darwin a halo on the occasion of Darwin's birth centenary (it was also 50 years since publication of "The Origin of Species" 1859). Darwin had died in 1882.
