Chernobyl decontamination. Emergency crew, known as liquidators, hosing down areas around the Chernobyl nuclear power station, Ukraine. On the 26th April 1986 the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded. The accident destroyed one of the reactors at the plant causing huge amounts of radiation to enter the atmosphere. It is considered the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history. Hundreds of thousands of liquidators were placed in charge of cleaning up the disaster. Many were exposed to lethal doses of radiation and many more continue to suffer the consequences of radiation exposure. Photographed in April 1986.
