Aleksandr Chudakov (1921-2001). Historical image of the Russian physicist and mathematician Aleksandr Evgenievich Chudakov reading at a desk. Chudakov was a specialist in cosmic ray physics and a gifted experimenter. He confirmed the existence of transition radiation in 1953 and in the early 1960s designed cosmic ray detectors that were flown on early Sputnik rocket flights. From the mid-60s he was responsible for the design and construction of the Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope, a project that came into operation in 1978 and continues to be used to study cosmic rays.
