Caption

The Latin name of the coneflower, Echinacea purpurea, comes from the Greek echinos , meaning hedgehog . The central cone becomes more pointed and prickly as the flower matures. Echinacea is renowned for its medicinal properties. Seeds germinate unevenly in 10 to 21 days. When the cones are in full seed, birds, especially finches, feed on them.
