Feeding mosquito. Female Anopheles freeborni mosquito feeding on human blood. The female mosquito feeds by piercing the skin and sucking blood through the proboscis (tube-shaped mouthpiece). She uses the blood meal for the production of eggs. This species of mosquito is a vector for the transmission of malaria to humans in the western United States, and is also known as the western malaria mosquito.
