Feeding mosquito. Female Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) feeding on human blood. The female mosquito feeds by piercing the skin and sucking blood through the proboscis (tube-shaped mouthpiece). She uses the blood meal for the production of eggs. This mosquito acts as a vector for the West Nile virus and the Dengue fever virus. Both of these viruses cause diseases that can be fatal. This mosquito originated in Asia, but it has been introduced to tropical and subtropical regions around the world.
