Caption

VLT telescope test exposure. This is Kueyen, Unit 2 (UT2) of four 8.2-metre telescopes making up the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at ESO's Paranal Observatory on Cerro Paranal, Chile. The telescope mirrors are flexible and are constantly adjusted by computers to compensate for atmospheric turbulence. The images from the four telescopes are then combined by interferometry to be equivalent to a single 16-metre diameter mirror. Here, Kueyen is tilted towards the horizontal position during a test exposure sequence. The focusing apparatus (foreground) is reflected in the mirror (background). Photographed on 23 March 2000.Restrictions:.
