Josif Abramovitch Kassirsky (1898-1971), Soviet haematologist. Born in Fergana, Uzbekistan, Kassirsky became a professor at the Central Institute for the Advanced Training of Physicians. His work included haematology and tropical diseases. He pioneered diagnostic puncture methods and intrasternal blood transfusions. Kassirsky was made an Honoured Scientist of the Uzbek SSR in 1960, and elected a member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences in 1963. From 1961 to 1963 he was a vice-president of the International Society of Hematology. His awards include two Orders of Lenin. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in 1968.
