Sergei Alekseyevich Lebedev (1902-1974), Soviet computer scientist. Lebedev was the designer of the first Soviet computers. During World War II he designed analog computers. After the war, his laboratory designed electronic computers, producing the BESM-1 (1951) and the M-20 and BESM-2 (both 1958). Several more BESM computers were produced, with many being used to calculate satellite and rocket orbits. From 1953 to his death he directed the Institute of Precision Mechanics and Computer Engineering. His awards include Hero of Socialist Labour, and the Lenin Prize and USSR State Prize. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in 1970.
