Yakov Mikhailovich Kolotyrkin (1910-1995), Soviet physical chemist. Kolotyrkin's work in electrochemistry helped to establish modern theories of corrosion and ways to prevent corrosion in metals. His career was spent at the Karpov Research Institute of Physical Chemistry, where he worked from 1937, and which he directed for nearly 40 years. He was elected a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, founded and edited a leading journal on corrosion (Zashchita Matallov), and worked with international organisations for co-operation on corrosion research. His awards include Hero of Socialist Labour. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in 1976.
