Caption

Color enhanced TEM (transmission electron micrograph) of intercellular crystals in the liver. They are not free in the cytoplasmic matrix but are invariably enclosed by membranes whose outer surface is often studded with ribosomes. They are presumed to be the storage form of a protein synthesized by the cell. Magnification: 19,000x.
