A crystal of Human Serum Albumin, (HSA), grown in conditions of microgravity during a flight of the Space Shuttle. X-Ray crystallography has recently revealed the 3D structure of this protein, opening the way for the design of new drugs to be carried more efficiently by the protein molecule through the body. Crystals grown in orbit are of a better quality and offer a more refined resolution to identify greater detail. As the most abundant protein in the circulatory system, HSA is important for the maintenance of plasma volume and the transport of a number of substances in the blood.
