Caption

Pediastrum alga. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a close-up of the remains of a Pediastrum sp. alga. This freshwater green alga forms a disc-like colony of cells. The colony comprises a central cell surrounded by concentric rings of cells. The outermost cells each have two lobes projecting outwards, giving the colony a "spiky" appearance. Some of the cells have become detached from this specimen.
