Vostok museum display. Visitors viewing the exhibit of the Vostok spacecraft capsule (lower right) at the Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics. The Vostok spacecraft carried Yuri Gagarin into orbit when he became the first human in space on 12 April 1961. This museum is located in Kaluga, Russia, and is named after the pioneering Russian spaceflight theorist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935). The museum was opened in 1967 and was the world's first museum on the history of space exploration. Photographed in 1969.
