Caption

Electron-positron collision. Computer display showing the result of an electron/positron collision inside the L3 detector at CERN, the European particle physics lab. The collision occurred at the centre of the frame, and produced enormous energy. This energy condensed to form a Z- nought particle, which immediately decayed into other particles. The magenta tracks in the centre of the frame are due to charged pions. These are surrounded by green, yellow and blue 'hits' registered by the hadron calorimeter. Neutral particles are detected by scintillating crystals (upper right and lower left of centre). The green line is due to a muon, detected at upper right.
