Ethiopian terrace farming. This farm is located on a deforested mountainside in a rural area of Ethiopia. Increasing population in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa as a whole has led to rising pressures on natural resources. This includes clearing forests for farming, causing increased soil erosion in the rainy season, when deep ravines are formed on the mountainsides. Up to 7 millimetres (70 tonnes) of soil are lost annually, which if not halted will turn the area into a desert. Photographed in the area around Midagdo Valley and Taganey Mountain, Ethiopia.
