Romsey observatory design. Historical artwork of the 'Romsey' observatory at Austwick Hall, Yorkshire, UK. This design was developed around 1863 by the Reverend Edward Lyon Berthon (1813-1899), of Romsey, Hampshire, England. Intended to be constructed relatively cheaply and quickly from wood, it had a rotating canvas dome, and a transit room (background). An observatory (later demolished) was built in the garden at Austwick Hall by the amateur astronomer Thomas Richard Clapham (1837-1911). Artwork from 'Handbook of Descriptive and Practical Astronomy' (George Frederick Chambers, 1890 fourth edition).
