Smyth transit instrument, in use with an observing hat. This instrument was housed in the Smyth Observatory, Bedford, England. This observatory was built by the British amateur astronomer William Henry Smyth (1788-1865) and also used by his son Charles Piazzi Smyth (1819-1900). Artwork from 'Handbook of Descriptive and Practical Astronomy' (George Frederick Chambers, 1890 fourth edition).
