Gasan Mamed Bagir Ogly Abdullayev (1918-1993), Azerbaijani-Soviet physicist, in a laboratory. Abdullayev studied first in Baku, and then under Ioffe in St Petersburg for his doctorate. He specialised in semiconductor physics, making discoveries relating to selenium and tellurium diodes and visible and infrared light detectors. He directed the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences' Institute of Physics from 1959 to his death. He was also a member (1967) and then President (1970) of that Academy. A corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1970), he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. Photographed in Azerbaijan in 1965.
