Wind-finding radar. This is a specialised weather radar instrument, used to measure wind speeds in the upper atmosphere. This is done by using the radar to track a balloon as it ascends through the atmosphere. The balloon carries a radar target that makes it visible to the radar system. Radar systems emit pulses of microwaves and detect the reflected echoes. The data gathered is used by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Photographed in the UK.
