The data is recorded with a pen attached to the horizontal metal arm, tracing a line on the paper on the rotating cylinder. As the pressure changes, the arm goes up or down. The data gathered is used by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Photographed in 1991 at the Halesowen weather station, Halesowen, West Midlands, UK.
