Short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) mother and dead calf, at the surface. The short-finned pilot whale, which is found throughout the world's temperate and tropical waters, is actually a large dolphin. When born, a pilot whale weighs around 100 kilograms and feeds on its mother's milk. Pilot whale mothers have been observed staying with their dead offspring for some time after death. Calves are only born every 3-5 years. Photographed in the Canary Islands.
