Topographical map of the world. Topographical map of the world, coloured to indicate height above or below a geoid (surface of constant gravitation). The deep oceans are dark blue, whilst continental shelves are seen as pale blue. Most of the land is yellow, with uplands in progressively darker orange. This image gives a good overview of the positions of the continental shelves, troughs and major mountain ranges and thus the relative positions of the major tectonic plates. Although the geoid chosen approximates to mean sea level, some local differences have led to the inundation of Florida, the Amazon Basin and central Australia among others.
