Caption

Earthrise over the Moon. An almost cloudless Earth seen above the Moon's horizon by the Clementine spacecraft in April 1994. The continent of Africa is seen clearly, as are the Mediterranean Sea, the Arabian Peninsula and India. Clementine was designed primarily to test sensors for the Ballistic Missile Defense Organisation (BMDO), with NASA scientists offered the chance to 'piggyback' some instruments on the spacecraft. After two months in orbit around the Moon, returning 1.7 million science images, the spacecraft suffered a systems failure and was unable to perform its military research. Clementine was launched on 25 January 1994.
