The Americas. Infrared satellite image showing the Americas and the Pacific Ocean. The Americas contain the continents of North America and South America with Central America in between. This great land mass extends from the Arctic to the Antarctic, from beyond 75 degrees north to past 55 degrees south, covering an area of about 42,000,000sq km with a population of over 500,000,000 people. The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean in the world with an area of about 166,242,500 sq km.
