Earth and nebulae. Computer artwork of the Earth with a nebula behind it. A nebula is a large cloud of gas and dust in space. They are often many light years across. Emission nebulae (pink) have been ionised by nearby stars until the hydrogen gas they contain glows red. Reflection nebulae (white) reflect starlight. Nebulae can undergo gravitational collapse to form stars and planets.
