Spain and Portugal. True-colour satellite image of the two countries making up the Iberian Peninsula of south-western Europe. North is at top. Water is blue, vegetation is green, arid areas are brown, and snow, ice and cloud are white. While Portugal takes much of the western Iberian coast (left), it is Spain that occupies most of the peninsula. The Pyrenees mountain range (tipped with white, upper right) separate Spain from France. The Atlantic Ocean (far left) and the Mediterranean Sea (lower right) surround Iberia. Part of northern Africa is at bottom right. Image taken on 28 May 2001 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra satellite.
