This coloured photograph shows the night-time city lights of Europe as seen from orbit. The image is a composite photo compiled from visual data gathered by several passes of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft as it orbited 450 nautical miles above the Earth. Cloud and land detail normally present in night- time DMSP photos were filtered out to enhance the light clusters. Note the variation in population density from country to country. The DMSP satellite is used to provide accurate weather analyses and forcasts for the US Military, although it is also used by the civilian community. It can photograph the entire Earth in less than 12 hours. Original is bw print e074/001.
