Caption

Satellite image of the world at night. The white areas correspond to city lights, thus providing an accurate indicator of urbanisation from region to region. The yellow areas (such as that around the Persian Gulf) correspond to natural gas flares associated with oil fields, while the red areas (such as those amongst the tropical forest region of equatorial Africa) are indicative of agricultural burnings. The image shows Europe and Africa at left and Asia on the right. The image was recorded by the visible/infrared Operational Linescan System onboard a Defense Meteorological Satellite Program spacecraft. Data supplied by Dr W.T. Sullivan, University of Washington.
