Caption

Satellite image of the British Isles at night, showing the distribution of city lights. The brightest areas are London and the Home Counties (bottom right), the industrial midlands and north- west, the north-east (coast just right of centre), and the Glasgow/Edinburgh corridor in Scotland (above centre). There are also concentrations of light around Belfast in Northern Ireland and Dublin in Eire (left of centre). The small blobs of light at top right are from flares on oil rigs in the North Sea. The northern coast of France (bottom right corner) is also liberally dusted with light. This image is a combination of data from NOAA and DMSP weather satellites.
