Earth at night from space. Colour-coded image of the Earth at night. North is at top. City lights (yellow) are concentrated in the densely populated northern hemisphere. Oil production flares (red) are mostly land-based but also appear in the North Sea. Burning vegetation (purple) typically occurs in equatorial regions where forests are burnt to clear land for agriculture. Off the coast of Japan, light from squid-fishing fleets is green. The aurora borealis is light blue. The data was obtained from satellites of the American Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP).
