To the west of New Zealand is the Tasman Sea, which separates it from Australia, some 1600 kilometres to the north-west. To the east is the southern Pacific Ocean. The Cook Strait separates North Island from South Island. Just south of South Island is Stewart Island, separated from South Island by the Foveaux Strait. New Zealand is a mountainous country, and South Island is dominated by the Southern Alps mountain range (white).
