Russia, satellite image. North is at top. Russia covers the extent of northern Asia from east to west. The Black Sea and Caspian Sea mark its south-western extremity. To the north of Russia is the Arctic Ocean. The Bearing Straits mark Russia's eastern edge, beyond which is North America. South of the Bearing Straits is the long, volcanic Kamchatka Peninsula and the Pacific Ocean. Lake Baikal (Centre) borders China, this is the largest single volume of freshwater in the world. Russia's capital city Moscow is situated in the west of the country.
