Lorraine (highlighted) is an administrative region in north-eastern France. To the north, it borders three countries: Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. It has a population of around 1.3 million (2005). Its capital is Metz, which lies towards the north of the region on the Moselle river, flowing from south to north.
